ANOTHER impressive bowling performance from national middle order batsman Narsingh ‘Ringo’ Deonarine, who followed up his first-game hat-trick with 5-19, guided Cellink Berbice to an authoritative 8-wicket victory over Essequibo at the Guyana National Stadium, yesterday. Playing in the second round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)-organised Carib Beer/Pepsi jointly sponsored Twenty20 competition, Essequibo faltered from 72 without loss to 103-8 from their 20 overs, with national leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo offering support to Deonarine with his 3-16.
In their reply, Cellink Berbice who snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Demerara in their first match, reached 109-2 from 17.3 overs, with Richard Ramdeen and Sewnarine Chattergoon leading the way with 36 and 31 respectively, while Deonarine chipped in with an unbeaten 20 (1×4, 1×6).
Essequibo won the toss and, opting to bat on a fast wicket, saw Norman Fredericks (29) on-drive Esaun Crandon through mid on for four, while Royan Fredericks (34) struck the same bowler over mid on for four as Essequibo reached 51 without loss after 9 overs.
A straightforward catch by Jonathan Foo off a leading edge from Norman Fredericks at point in the 13th over, separated the Fredericks siblings after they had posted 72 for the first wicket, following which Royan Fredericks was bowled by Bishoo two balls later, at 74-2.
The all-too-familiar batting collapse from Essequibo showed itself at the introduction of Narsingh Deonarine, who showed the bowling performance that brought him the hat-trick against Demerara, when he dismissed Balchand Shivamber (1) and brothers Dillon and Jason Heyliger who made 2 and 3 respectively, as Essequibo slipped to 86-5.
When Bishoo took a low return catch to send back Ricardo Adams (4), Essequibo were 86-6 and they got their 100 when Sherwin Murray (12) struck the first delivery of the final over from Deonarine over backward square leg for four, before he holed out to Ramdeen at long on.
Anthony Adams struck the final delivery to long on for four, as Essequibo ended on 108-8 from their 20 overs, losing eight wickets for 31 runs from the final seven overs of their innings, as Deonarine and Bishoo duplicated their bowling performance against Demerara, this time combining to take all eight wickets.
Ramdeen 36 (2×4, 2×6) and Chattergoon 31 (3×4) got things started for the defending champions, with the former steering Rayon Thomas to the vacant third man position for four, followed by an inside out shot over extra cover two balls later, with both boundaries coming in the first over.
Ramdeen followed that up with a six off Dillon Heyliger in the third over while Chattergoon cut Royan Fredericks who bowled his off-spin ahead of Jason Heyliger through point for his first boundary, as Cellink Berbice raced to 50 without loss from 5.4 overs.
Essequibo saw the back of Ramdeen who played all around a delivery from Anthony Adams (1-23) and was bowled with the score on 71 in the ninth over. He was quickly followed by Chattergoon who was run-out two balls later by Ricardo Adams.
Deonarine was joined by his skipper Assad Fudadin (16*) and together they took their team home with Deonarine capping off a fantastic match with a six back over the head of Murray that took Cellink Berbice to 107-2, following which Fudadin hit Jason Heyliger through the covers to seal the win.
