After death plunge…
THE body of dance promoter Godwin Maxwell, who plunged into the Mahaicony Creek on Monday, was recovered at about 06:30 h yesterday by a search party comprising Police ranks and his relatives. It was taken out of the water about one and a half miles from where the man jumped and a post mortem examination established that the cause of death was asphyxiation, due to drowning and blunt trauma to the head.
Maxwell took the plunge after escaping from custody at Mahaicony Police Station where he was being kept following attendance at Mahaicony Court, all on the East Coast of Demerara.
The deceased, 30, of Calcutta, Mahaicony, had appeared before Magistrate Haymant Ramdhani on charges of failing to submit income tax returns and, on being ordered to post $45,000 bail, was escorted from the courtroom to the Enquiries Office of the station and put to sit on a bench.
It was from there that Maxwell fled with Police in hot pursuit.
Maxwell’s uncle, Wilbert Inniss told the Guyana Chronicle yesterday that his relatives are satisfied with the retrieval of the body and the autopsy.
A funeral service will be held on Friday at Calcutta Cricket Ground, where the viewing starts at 14:00 h.
