Four GDF soldiers held in mining camp robbery probe

– found with quantity of gold, large sum of cash
A GUYANA Defence Force (GDF) officer and three other ranks are in Police custody following an armed robbery at a mining camp in Region One (Barima/Waini).

The crime was committed last week Thursday, a GDF statement said yesterday.

The Army said the booty, comprising a quantity of gold and a large sum of cash, was found on the quartet.

The statement said the detainees were conducting a patrol at Five Star at the time of the heist and preliminary reports indicate that they allegedly robbed the camp.

It said searches, conducted by the GDF investigative team after interrupting the patrol, yielded the stolen property on their person.

The suspects were subsequently handed over to the Police to facilitate investigations into the matter.

The GDF statement said its administration remains totally committed to a transparent and thorough investigation of the incident.

Crime Chief Seelall Persaud, when contacted on the issue yesterday, confirmed that the four soldiers are being held by the Police but declined to elaborate.
He pointed out, though, that the Police probe is ongoing.
