Unity couple shot, beaten and robbed now out of hospital

Fifty-three -year-old Rajdeo Taijpaul and his wife Sumintra Hemwant, 49, the couple attacked and robbed by a gang of armed men at Mahaica on Monday, were both discharged from the Georgetown Public Hospital yesterday after being treated at the institution.

During the attack, the gang of seven, armed with handguns and cutlasses, according to a police report, shot Taigpaul in the left leg and right hand and beat and terrorized his wife before escaping with $800,000 and a quantity of jewellery.

The woman was treated at the GPH for blood trauma to the shoulder and other minor injuries, while her husband was treated for gunshot wounds.

Around 14:30 hrs Monday, Taijpaul, a taxi driver, and his wife Sumintra Hemwant, were outside in their yard as he was preparing to leave for work when they heard their dogs barking and were confronted by the bandits who demanded cash.  As some of the men assaulted Taijpaul, others went into the house, held Haemwant hostage, ransacked the building and carted off the cash and jewellery.
