Cabinet appoints rice assessment committees at farmers’ behest

Cabinet recently appointed new rice assessment committees in Regions Two, Three, Four, Five and Six to expedite the hearing and settlement of land disputes. These committees were formed subsequent to farmers’ requests for greater assistance from the Rice Assessment Committee.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the new committees will also be responsible for resolving issues relating to payment of rates by landlords since most lands are rented to farmers for agricultural activities.

The new committees will be effective from March 6, 2009 to March 05, 2011.

Region Two’s Chairperson on the committee is Sunil Scarce, while Bibi Shadick was appointed to represent Wakenaam and Leguan Islands, and from the right bank of the Bonasika River to the left bank of the Demerara River, Region Three.

In Region Four, Cecil Sullivan was appointed, while in Region Five the appointee is Jaya Manickchand. The Region Six Chairperson is Adrian Anamayah. (GINA)
