Crime Chief, Seelall Persaud yesterday said that Anthony Taylor, who was shot and killed in Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, during a robbery on Thursday night, has been identified as a wanted man and a member of the ‘Cobra’ gang. Mr. Persaud added the shot and injured, Troy Collymore, was charged but got off a murder/robbery, while, Clyde Harris is on bail for a gun robbery and is known to the police for being involved in several robberies under arms.
He noted that bystander, Noel Phillips was robbed of some cash and jewelllery; he was wearing at the time.
The owner of the drug store, who operates a stall in Plaisance Market, was relieved of eight laptops and a gold chain by four gunmen who showed up with the intent to rob the place on Thursday night, which is located at Victoria Road, Plaisance.
Police in a press release said that at about 15:00 hrs on July 4, 2010 ranks of a police anti-crime patrol, acting on information received, confronted wanted man “Cobra” and a group of five other men who were on the roadway at East Ruimveldt Front Road, Georgetown
However, police reported that on seeing the police “Cobra” and two of the men began running, one of whom opened fire on the police. The police returned fire during which Osafi Johnson of East Ruimveldt Front Road was shot and injured to his upper left shoulder and left foot. A 9mm. Beretta pistol with three matching rounds was found in his possession and he was a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Two more of the group of men was arrested by the police; however “Cobra” and two others managed to escape.
On July 5, 2010 the Police issued a wanted bulletin for Tyrone Rowe called ‘Cobra’, who is wanted for questioning in relation to murder and a series of robberies.
Meanwhile, Police, in a press release said they are investigating an armed robbery that occurred at about 21:45 hours on Thursday, August 05, 2010, at Plaisance Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara, during which, one of the perpetrators, Anthony Taylor called ‘Bow Wow’ of Albouystown, was shot and killed.
Police said Noel Phillips, 48, an overseas-based Guyanese residing at Howes Street, Charlestown; Troy Collymore called ‘Nellie’, 35, of Plaisance Squatting Area, East Coast Demerara; and Clyde Harris, 23, of Plaisance, were also shot and injured.
Investigations so far have revealed that Noel Phillips, Troy Collymore and Chandrika Datt called ‘Shiv’, 27, of Industry, East Coast Demerara, were chatting in front of a drug store owned by Datt, when he left to close up the store after selling a customer. While in the process of closing up a man armed with a firearm entered and held him at gunpoint, while Anthony Taylor and another accomplice who were also armed accosted Phillips and Collymore outside.
Police said the armed man took away a quantity of jewellery valued at $320,000 in cash along with eight lap top computers from Chandrika Datt, while his accomplices took away jewellery valued at $600,000 and an undisclosed sum of cash from Noel Phillips.
During the robbery rounds were discharged which resulted in Anthony Taylor being shot and killed while Noel Phillips was shot to his right arm and chest, Troy Collymore was shot to his head, and Clyde Harris who was in the vicinity shot to his left side jaw.
The two other perpetrators escaped, while Noel Phillips has been admitted to a private hospital and Troy Collymore and Clyde Harris admitted to the GPHC.
