SPORTS Journalist and Local Government Elections (LGE) Candidate Carwyn Holland is calling for a multi-purpose sports facility to be constructed in Linden.Holland made the call last Saturday while chairing the Linden Youth Empowerment Forum with Hon. Minister Nicolette Henry and Hon. Minister Valarie Patterson in attendance.
Holland noted that youth motivation is at an all-time low, provoked by years of marginalisation and two factors that are going to bolster their enthusiasm are jobs and proper recreational and sports facilities since Lindeners are a sports-loving people.
“The wider call would be an all-weather, multipurpose stadium but I understand that will take some time and a lot of financial resources so my call is for a smaller facility which could house a large number of disciplines,” Holland said.
He stressed: “Give them jobs and a place to go and participate in healthy activities and I believe we will have a healthier youth population in Linden.”
The Mackenzie Sports Club which belongs to the community, Holland said, is not easily accessible and that too must be addressed in the interest of youths.
Holland also called on the Government of Guyana to fast-track the National Sports Policy and he believes that the absence of a sports policy is a setback for the development of sports in Guyana.
In an invited comment, Holland cited the need for the return of active and progressive youth clubs in Linden. He credited his participation in the Police Youth Club and the Mackenzie Sports Club as a youth in Linden for having a major and positive impact on his life.
