Thunderstorm causes damage to house, television station
A POWERFUL bolt of lightning, accompanied by heavy thunder, high winds and driving rain, damaged a house at Mora, Moruca, in Region One (Barima/Waini). The three-bedroom wooden building lost a wall and three columns supporting it and several glass windows were shattered. A television antenna, a fan and other electrical appliances inside were also burned.
Owner of the property, Mr. Joseph James is thanking God for sparing the lives of himself and family, after such a close encounter with death.
He said there was a big explosion and something looking like a thunderbolt fell, hitting his home, before sinking deep into the earth.
James said the noise caused members of his household, including him, to become deaf for a while.
The same weather conditions also caused damage to electrical appliances at Alfro Alphonso Channel 8 RCA television station at Charity, Essequibo Coast, around 01:00 h yesterday.
As a result, broadcasting was halted for the rest of the day and technicians from Georgetown are currently working to assess the losses and facilitate a resumption of broadcasts.
