THE Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) will serve off its National Junior and Cadet championship from tomorrow at the National Gymnasium. National coach Linden Johnson said the championship will see the best of Guyana’s young talent on display.Competition begins at 16:00hrs when the novices begin their battle, while later in the afternoon Under-9 and Under-13 players will move into action.
The Under-13 Boys category is expected to be keenly contested as it is stacked with talented players, the likes of Nyron Bissu, Isaiah Layne and Kaysan Ninvalle.
Colin Wong and Dhanesh Persaud are the top seeded Boys Under-9 players while Ninvalle is expected to be challenged by Kristian Shahadeo and Wong in the battle for honours in the Boys Under-11.
The Under-13 Girls’ category is expected to see a close contest between Nevaeh Clarkson and Abigail Martin. According to Johnson, the championship will conclude on Sunday and is critical to achieving the crowning and naming of national champions in the respective categories into the annals of history of the sport.
In addition, the holding of the upcoming competition will foster the establishment of ranking system which would guide the national selection process.
It will also establish a benchmark to which players must aspire and improve the competitiveness of the sport domestically and it allows for the promotion and marketing of players.
