DELROY Joseph called “Barney,” who is wanted for a series of armed robberies and break and enter offences, was shot after police swooped down at a house at Nicolay Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice, just after midday on Thursday.Police acting on a tip-off, went to the house where the suspect, along with three others were seen in the upper flat of the two-storey building.
Police sources claim that Joseph was armed with a knife when he was shot.
NEIGHBOURS, who declined to be identified, said they were alerted after seeing an unmarked police vehicle motoring through the street. Minutes after, several armed plainclothes ranks surrounded the house rented by Milisa Fraser, a teacher who was not home at the time.
Within a few minutes three persons, including two females, one of whom lives at the residence, were seen being escorted by the police out of the building. Joseph was not one of them.
One of the women was questioned, and asked why she allowed the police to bring her outside while ranks remained inside the house.
Shortly afterwards, a gunshot was heard in the house, followed by a groan and Joseph was seen exiting the building under police escort.
Residents claimed that they did not hear any commotion and believe that Joseph did not resist arrest.
Joseph is currently under police guard at the New Amsterdam Hospital, while the other three persons, including a pregnant youth remain in police custody.
Fraser, on hearing of the news, hurried home.
Her three bedrooms were ransacked and one had heavy bloodstains. Her passport with a US Visa was missing, along with money and jewellery.
