Life-term for murdering girlfriend

MURDER accused David Godfrey Johnson yesterday pleaded not guilty to murdering his girlfriend, but guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter. He was sentenced to life-imprisonment which spans at least 20 years. Though with the deduction of four years, which was served by incarceration, presiding Judge Navindra Singh noted that with good behaviour the prisoner could enjoy parole and be out after serving 16 years.
The 27-year-old prisoner told the court that no one had forced him to plead guilty and that he fully knew that he was responsible for his girlfriend’s death.
Death it is said was due to drowning with brunt trauma.
Johnson, called “Red Man,” is said to have committed the act in 2012 when he murdered Leonaka Natasha.
The judge advised the prisoner to take advantage of the opportunity offered him to learn a trade while in custody and to do all in his power to take his rightful place in society.
Prosecuting in the matter were lawyers, Naressa Leander, Michael Shahoud and Siand Dhurjon.
