Friendship man charged with carnal knowledge and unlawful wounding

TWENTY-year-old Royston Gilkes also known as ‘Harry’ of Friendship East Coast Demerara, was on Wednesday slapped with two charges. The first charge alleges that on Wednesday June 23, he unlawfully had carnal knowledge with a girl below fifteen years of age. Attorney at Law Harrichand Mahadeo, who represented the defendant in his bail application, told the court that his client – who is a construction worker – resides with his mother, one brother and two sisters, and has never had any previous brushes with the law. He further stressed to the court that his client plays a major role in assisting his family financially.
Gilkes pleaded not guilty to the charge and was then placed on $70,000 bail by Magistrate Shurdell Isaccs–Marcus.
The second charge read to the defendant alleged that he unlawfully wounded Marvin Johnson so as to cause him grievous bodily harm, to which he also pleaded not guilty.
He was then place on additional bail in the sum of $50,000.
His matters were all adjourned to 16 July, 2010.
