A TAXI driver and his accomplice were yesterday arrested by police after they robbed two passengers of cash and valuables while holding them at gunpoint.
Police said that two men, Chrishendatt Kanhai and Madia Ramnarine, were robbed after hiring the car to take them to Eccles on the East Bank of Demerara.
Investigations into the robbery revealed that it occurred at about 03:30h at Stone Avenue, Campbellville, when the driver, armed with a hand gun, and another man, attacked and robbed Kanhai and Ramnarine.
The victims hired a taxi on Sheriff Street to go to the EBD village, when, upon observing that the car was going through Stone Avenue, they voiced their concern whereupon the driver pulled out a handgun and held up the two passengers.
He was subsequently joined by another man who rode up on a bicycle. The two bandits then took away a cell phone and $60,000 from the victims and drove away.
Quick response by the police led to the arrest of the two men in a house at Campbell Avenue, Campbellville.
The two suspects were identified by their victims, and the motor vehicle suspected to have been used by the robbers was recovered.
The police said charges will be laid shortly.
