FRUTA Conquerors defeated Monedderlust 2-1 and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) outclassed Buxton United 1-0 when the Stag Elite League continued at the Tucville Community Centre ground Thursday night.Kwamie LaFleur (51st minute) and Dennis Edwards (83rd minute) scored for the SM Jaleel-sponsored team who remain undefeated and climbed atop the eight-team table after notching their second win in as many matches.
Monedderlust, who had came from behind to stop the GDF in their opening game, saw Kimba Brathwaite score in the 77th minute but the forward’s father, Gordon Braithwaite who coaches the Berbicians, will have to head back to the drawing board.
Fruta Conquerors head coach Calvin Allen had to dig deep to find a late winner against Buxton United in their first match of the League, but on Thursday, he ensured that his team this time, made all their chances counted with the Tucville unit troubling Monedderlust early.
Eon Alleyne, the usual troublemaker from Fruta Conquerors on the pitch in the early minutes of the heated contest called the Monedderlust goalkeeper to work when he (Alleyne) lashed onto a loose ball.
The first half, though ending goalless, was interesting, since both teams created their fair share of goal-scoring chances.
Meanwhile, in the night’s opening game between Buxton United and the GDF, the East Coast team should have won the contest and would want to blame their forwards for squandering their sometimes clear goal chances.
The team outplayed the GDF but it was Delroy Fraser in the 44th minute that put the Army in the lead.
Their (GDF) defence led by captain Selwyn Isaacs stood firmly against an inexperienced Buxton attack who, after Thursday’s game, are at the bottom of the table.
The Stag Elite League will continue tomorrow at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground with another double-header.
In the opening game from 18:00hrs, Slingerz FC will be chasing their first win of the league when they come up against Monedderlust while the GFC and Alpha United clash from 20:30hrs.
