Media tour GNBS for World Metrology Day observance

GUYANA National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) yesterday, in observance of World Metrology Day 2010, hosted an open day at its head office in the National Exhibition Complex Sophia, Greater Georgetown.
The theme for the occasion is ‘Metrology – measurements in science and technology
… a bridge to innovation’ and it concentrates on how measurement influences science and stimulates innovation.
The programme, from 09:00 hrs to 15:00 hrs, saw the media being given a guided tour of the facility by GNBS Public Relations Officer, Mr. Lloyd David.
The visitors toured the various laboratories and observed some of the procedures involved in the metrology services offered by GNBS.

Among the sections visited were the Legal Metrology Laboratory where Guyana Power & Light (GPL) meters were being tested on an electricity test bench.
David said they are in the process of setting up a system to test all Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) meters, as well, because all meters of both utilities must be authenticated before installation.
Other laboratories at the location are for testing small and large scales and masses, which are examined twice yearly and sealed by GNBS and for the calibration of fuel  tankers and terminals.

The media representatives were also shown into the Scientific Metrology Laboratory, which is headed by technician II, Mr. Edward Melville, where tests are done on thermometers for medical laboratories.
He said all thermometers must pass through a process to provide traceability to international standards.
Another section of that laboratory tests gold to ascertain its purity and there is one more where mass dimensional testing is conducted.

The Mass Reference Laboratory, the Moisture Laboratory for rice farmers and millers and that for textiles and footwear are there, as well.
