THE Department of Education, in collaboration with Regional Administration of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), yesterday sponsored a march around Queenstown Village, on Essequibo Coast, in observance of National Truancy Day.
Senior Schools Welfare Officer, Ms. Meenawattie (only name stated) said scores of Queenstown Primary School pupils participated in the procession.
She said Queenstown was chosen for the event because many children in the area are not attending school regularly and punctually.
School children, accompanied by their teachers, too, walked around the village with banners urging ‘Don’t stay away from school’, ‘Stop child labour now’, ‘Education is the key to success’, ‘Children should not be working but in school’ and ‘All parents are responsible, even you’.
One of the key responsibilities of the Schools Welfare Department is to get all children to attend school and Meenawattie said the focus is to involve parents and guardians in the anti-truancy campaign, which is continuing in the Region.
