M&CC… NGOs, churches free to apply for tax exemptions

THE Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) is advising all religious and non-governmental organisations that they are free to apply for exemption from taxes. City Hall is authorised to grant such exemptions, the M&CC said in a recent press statement.
Section 211 of the Municipal and District Councils Act 28:01, says that no rates shall be levied in respect of property used solely for the purpose of public religious worship, for the purpose of education, burial ground, cemetery or crematorium.
Furthermore, the council said it is urging citizens, who have not paid their property taxes, to do so urgently, since payment of property taxes will assist the council to provide the critical services needed in the city.
“Rates due in respect of a general rate shall be payable in four equal instalments, which shall become due on the first day of February or on the day of service of the demand note, whichever day is later, the first day of April, the first day of July and the first day of October,” the council reminded.
If citizens are experiencing financial difficulties, they can make use of the payment plan offered by the council to settle their arrears.
