POPULAR Supermarket, Price is Right, of No. 79 Municipal Market and Public Road No. 79 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, will provide sponsorship for the Combined Upper Corentyne/Skeldon combined team for the CARICOM Championship.
t a simple ceremony held recently, Vadisha Ragbeer, employee of the Supermarket, said that her company is happy to be the official sponsor, adding that the business entity is pleased with the work of the Upper Corentyne Cricket Association (UCCA) since it was resuscitated. She also commended the work of the BCB despite its limited resources.
Speaking on behalf of the Berbice Cricket Board, treasurer Vicky Bharosay thanked the owner of Price is Right for his continued support to cricket in the Upper Corentyne area. He added that the sponsorship will cover travelling, playing shirts and refreshments on the day of the game. In closing, he called on other businesses to assist clubs/associations in their area and urged the teams to approach them for help. He cautioned though that the cricket clubs must be accountable to build sponsors’ confidence.
Meanwhile, the senior selectors have named a strong Combined Upper Corentyne/Skeldon team for the one-day tournament.
The team is as follows: Omesh Khemraj (captain), Naeem Yacoob, Viendra Gooniah, Tameshwar Ramoutar, Thameshwar Kumar, Totaram Persaud, Tarick Chaitram, Latchman Roopchand, Junior Blair, Sherwin Murray, Charles France, Devendra Jaggernauth, Davanand Chatterpaul, Parmeshwar Chatterpaul and Davendra Budhoo. The coach is Hubern Evans.
According to the BCB, proceeds from the CARICOM Championship, which will be held on July 5 at the historic Albion Sports Complex, will be used mainly to organise a very important three-day cricket competition.
Eight top T20 First Division teams in Berbice will compete in a 10-over knockout competition with the final of 20 overs to be played under lights for a top prize of $80 000 and a trophy. The runners-up will receive $40 000 and a trophy with the losing semi-finalists collecting $15 000 each. The man-of-the-match in every game will be rewarded. Action will commence at 10:00hrs.
The participating teams are: Upper Corentyne/Skeldon, Port Mourant, Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, Albion, Young Warriors/Rose Hall Centre, Police/Bermine, Blairmont/West Berbice and Bush Lot/D’Edward. The Board said that the teams were selected in such a manner that all the top players in Berbice will be on show.
Many gate prizes will be up for grabs for fans. There will also be a well-stocked bar and musical entertainment. To promote the game, eight schools in the Lower Corentyne area will be given 15 passes each.
