Man’s home is his castle

THE recent article in the newspapers concerning a JP whose fence was activated by electrical wiring, allegedly resulting in the death of a trespasser has evoked a stir in many quarters.

Life is precious and the right to live is clearly enshrined in the Constitution. The right to live, however, is expected to be by honest means and not through ill-gotten gains or lawlessness of any sort. You cannot run afoul of the law and want to be right.

On the other hand, since a ‘man’s home is his castle’, he has the moral responsibility, by using any and every possible means at his disposal, to protect himself, his family members, his property and wealth. This hinges on self-preservation and self-defence. Nonetheless, this protection should be done within the confines of the law.

All our freedoms, liberties and rights in the Constitution require a concomitant responsibility on the part of everyone to obey the law of the land.

This alleged JP – killing incident is a lesson to all. JPs are advised to take all necessary precautions according to the law in ensuring the safety of themselves, families and others.

Meanwhile, let the law take its course and let justice prevail. With God’s intervention, however, anything is possible and no one should speculate.
