Banks DIH Sevens championships to open rugby season today

THE Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) will officially open its Men’s and Women’s Rugby Season with the Banks DIH Sevens Championships today at the National Park rugby ground.
The opening ceremony and march past of teams will commence at 10:30 h. Neil Kumar, Director of Sport, will deliver the opening remarks.
The opening of the Rugby Season follows on a year of resounding success of Guyana’s National Men’s and Women’s Sevens teams winning the Caribbean
Championships held in Mexico last November and the Men’s team going on to distinguish themselves by drawing their game with France, currently number 4 in the world, in the IRB Sevens World Series played in Las Vegas in February this year.
The Men’s Sevens team have already begun intense preparation to contest the Central America & Caribbean Games Rugby Sevens to be played at the National stadium, July 24 & 25, and both the Men’s and Women’s Sevens teams to defend their Caribbean Championships in Guyana immediately following the CAC Games, July 27- 31.
The Banks DIH Championship trophy will be contested by Men’s teams from Yamaha Caribs, Pepsi Hornets and the Guyana Defence Force, while the President’s Cup will be contested by Women’s team, from Yamaha Caribs and Pepsi Hornets.
The tournament will be followed by the GRFU Sevens League with the men contesting the President’s Championship Trophy and the women the Vice -President’s Championship Trophy.
