THIRTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD Charles Austin of Bent Street, Georgetown, a father of two who allegedly stole his mistress’s jewellery and cellular phone because she had ended their love affair, appeared yesterday before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.The allegation is that on March 10 at Eastern Highway, Georgetown, he stole from the person of Davlin Daniels more than $100,000 worth in gold jewellery and her 35,000 Samsung cell phone.
Austin denied the allegation, and explained to the court that he had bought the said items for Daniels and they belong to him.
Police Prosecutor Bharrat Mangru told the court that on the day in question, the two parties had a misunderstanding when the defendant became annoyed and relieved Daniels of the articles, hence the charges.
Mangru objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness and prevalence of the offence. He said that if bail is granted, Austin might interfere with the woman.
Austin was nevertheless placed on $100,000 bail, and will make his next court appearance on March 23.
