St. Joseph High CXC candidates tour GPL plant

FORTY-SIX Physics and Electricity students of St. Joseph High School, were, on Thursday, taken by Guyana Power & Light Inc. (GPL) on a tour of its newest power plant. The fifth formers, who are preparing for Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) examinations in June, were afforded the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the latest technology.
GPL Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Bharat Dindyal, explained that the visit was part of the students’ syllabus and would help prepare them for their tests.
He said GPL has also been encouraging University of Guyana (UG) undergraduates to make use of the offer, from the utility, to provide knowledge on such subjects.
Plant Manager, Mr. Aaron Fraser afforded the visitors access to examine the modern facility which is a major player in the diesel industry and expressed hope that they will be motivated to become engineers.

Health and Safety Manager, Mr. Gary Hall, said the plant was commissioned last December and is responsible for providing close to 90 per cent of the electricity in Region Four (Demerara/Mahaica).
He said the power station is technologically advanced and environmentally friendly.
Speaking to the media on the occasion, St. Joseph Physics Teacher, Mr. Guy Griffith, said the purpose of the touring was to give the students first hand experience with the technology in a modern plant and expose them to the under-energy conversion of the processes.
Also present were Senior Divisional Director, Projects and Operations, Mr. Colin Singh; Officer-in-Charge of the Control Centre, Mr. Brian Goodridge and Public Relations Officer, Ms. Shevion Sears-Murray.
