Attempted rape accused refused bail pending PI

LATCHMIN Raghubir, of Vryheid, West Canje, will remain in prison until the commencement of the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the attempted rape charge against him.
Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo gave the order yesterday, at New Amsterdam Court, also in Berbice, following a report, by Probation and Welfare Officer Rubena
Marshall, after the Court expressed concern over the safety of the alleged victim.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Charrandass Persaud had sought bail for the accused but Marshall informed the Court that there was a likelihood of tampering as Raghubir will have access to the virtual complainant.
Earlier, Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting, said, last February 11, the accused placed a knife at the victim’s neck, threw her to the ground and removed  her underwear.
However, she resisted the attack and managed to escape from her attacker, the Prosecutor said.
He said, on the day of the incident, the 15-year-old orphan was at home with her maternal grandfather, who was consuming alcohol with the assailant and fell asleep, affording opportunity for the failed rape.
The case will be called, again, on May 3.
