Guyana avert danger as T&T held to fifth draw

PROVIDENCE, Guyana (CMC) – Guyana earned their second successive draw when they managed to frustrate a zealous Trinidad & Tobago side on the final day of their WICB Regional four-day match yesterday.

Set a tricky 307 to win in nearly two sessions, Guyana gave T&T a whiff of victory when they slipped to 26 for two at tea but they recovered to reach 133 for four at the close to snatch a share of the points, thanks to a timely half-century from Royston Crandon.

For Trinidad & Tobago, it was their fifth stalemate but it moved them to 39 points and into third place in the standings behind leaders Jamaica (60) and second-placed Barbados (51).

Resuming the day at 14 for one, T&T declared at 178 for eight an hour and 20 minutes after lunch, in hopes of forcing a victory in the match.

Guyana quickly lost Assad Fudadin (2) and Leon Johnson (0) to stumble to 26 for two at tea, and on resumption leg-spinner Imran Khan (2-33) snatched his first wicket when he trapped captain Travis Dowlin lbw for two, to leave the hosts in further trouble at 31 for three.

But Royston Crandon, who hit 55 off 83 balls with seven fours and a six, then shared two crucial partnerships to prop up the innings and save Guyana from what would have been their fifth defeat.

Firstly, he added 37 for the fourth wicket with Chris Barnwell, whose 41 occupied 76 balls and included six fours and a six.

When Barnwell became Khan’s second wicket at 68 for four, Crandon posted a precious 65 for the fifth wicket with first innings century-maker Narsingh Deonarine who was unbeaten on 26 at the close.

Earlier Daren Ganga scored 43 from 71 balls and Kieron Pollard got 34, as T&T tried to gather crucial runs in order to make their declaration.

The duo shared 61 for the fifth wicket but T&T were kept in check by pacer Esaun Crandon (3-31) and Steven Jacobs (3-32).
Guyana remain at the bottom of the table on 10 points.
