GTI dispose of PC to win Mashramani basketball title

… St Stanislaus College take third place
GEORGETOWN Technical Institute (GTI) overpowered President’s College (PC) in the final of the Mashramani Schools basketball competition which took place at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Sunday afternoon.

GTI’s impressive 85-53 victory was the result of the experience of their squad which included a number of national junior basketball players who, by the end of the first half, had already charged ahead to a 25-point lead.

At one point in the first half GTI were on a 11-0 scoring streak, which was heavily shouldered by Shelroy Thomas, and who was able to penetrate the President’s College defence with little and at times no opposition.

The GTI point guard scored 16 points in the first half of the game and went on to score a total of 22 points.

The second half saw (PC) making a desperate effort to get themselves back into contention, with their captain Richard Mohandatt, scoring guard for the U-19 national boys’ team, registering a game-high 26 points which included six long-range three-pointers.

This, however, was not enough to stop the bombardment by the GTI team with their MVP Kevin Jordan scoring a total of 19 points and teammates Colwin Nurse and Keon Hayles following him closely with 14 and 11 points respectively.

“We can hold our own against the Caribbean” were the words of an impressed Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony, who also went on to say that the talent displayed by the youngsters makes him feel confident about the country’s participation in the upcoming Inter-Guyana Games.

Director of Sport Neil Kumar said that they will strive to make this competition an annual event and said that age categories will be enforced in the future and that participation of students will depend on their grades and their attendance at their respective schools being more than satisfactory.

The battle for third place saw St Stanislaus College beat Charlestown Secondary School 59-38.

Jamal Scott of St Stanislaus College led the score sheets with an overall 19 points, while Seon Braithwaite and Cowen Gittens scored 13 and 11 points respectively. Colin McIntyre and Orison Amsterdam’s efforts saw the two Charlestown players lead their team in scoring with 12 and 10 points.
