2nd annual ‘Screw’ Richmond memorial U-18 football

Mackenzie High School remain unbeaten after first round
MACKENZIE High School (MHS) have a perfect score going into the second round action while New Silvercity Secondary and the School of Excellence played to a 1-1 draw last Wednesday  in this year’s Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Memorial Under-18 Schools football championship, which comes off a week’s break in the
two-group competition and is being played at grounds across the town of Linden.
The tournament, which is being sponsored by a United States-based organisation comprising Lindeners who are residing overseas, is in its second year honouring one of the town’s greatest sportspersons in ‘Screw’ Richmond, who was also the first footballer to have represented the country.
In the latest match and to wrap up the first round in Group  B action, the School of Excellence and New Silvercity  Secondary School played to a 1-1 stalemate at the Mackenzie  Sports Club ground last Wednesday.
In that game School of Excellence first netted through Romario Grandison who struck in the 7th minute only to see the scores levelled when New Silvercity Secondary got the equaliser as Quincy Blackman scored in the 10th minute and the game remained tied to the end.
Mackenzie High School, with the tournament’s leading goalscorer in Ron Fiedtkou with five goals, are in the lead in  Group A with three wins and no loss having hammered Marcia Craig Institute 6-0 in their first game, scoring a 3-2  victory in their game against Wisburg Annexe and edging past Linden Foundation Secondary 1-0.
They are on nine points followed by Linden Foundation who  are next on seven points after routing Wisburg Annexe 4-1 and easing past Marcia Craig Institute 3-1, with their lone  lost to Mackenzie High by that lone goal.
In the joint third spot battling to stay off the carpet position in this group are Wisburg Annexe and Marcia Craig Institute who are each on one point after two losses and one draw.
In group B Christianburg Wismar Secondary lead with six points in a group where the competition is much tighter. Christianburg Wismar Secondary have beaten Wisburg Secondary 2-0 and School of Excellence 3-0 for their two wins while their lone loss has been to New Silver City Secondary by a 2-0 scoreline. New Silvercity Secondary are behind them by a point.
Wisburg Secondary have four points after one win which was earned against School of Excellence by a 3-0 margin, drawing against New Silvercity Secondary 2-2.
In the bottom position, School of Excellence from one draw earned against New Silvercity Secondary are 1-1 and lost against Wisburg Secondary 3-0 and Christianburg Wismar Secondary also by a 3-0 score.
The competition resumes on Thursday when Mackenzie High face Linden Foundation Secondary in a Group A match at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground at 15:00 h while the following
Tuesday Wisburg play Christianburg Wismar Secondary in a Group B encounter also at 15:00 h.
The top two teams in each group at the end of the second round will qualify for the semifinal.
