‘Biggy’ Small confirmed for GABA National Open

QUINCY `Biggy’ Small, Guyana’s second wonder after Kaieteur Falls, will touch down in Guyana on October 19 to participate in the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association National Open boxing competition. This was confirmed yesterday in an interview with Chronicle Sport.

“I’ll be home after 14 years. It feels great and I am excited. It has been a long time,” Small said from his base in New York. The 6-foot 4-inch, 255-pound muscle mania, arguably the biggest local fighter to lace up gloves and would be competing in the super heavyweight category.
He has been training at the Gleason’s Gym in New York with former national junior welterweight champion Dillon Carew in his corner and plans stepping up workouts from this week. “I am training as hard as possible and I plan to give a very good show when I get home. I hit hard and I hit quick,” Small declared.
“The level of sparring competition at Gleason is very high so there is no doubt that I will be in shape and ready for anything when I get home.” Small is the younger brother of former WBC cruiserweight champion Wayne `Big Truck’ Braithwaite and has lost once in seven fights.
He acknowledged his aim is to win another Olympic medal at the Olympics for Guyana and has set his sight on realising that dream in 2016 in Brazil. “I know that fighting in the National Open is my first step to making my dream of winning a medal in the Olympic for my country come through. That’s why I am doing everything possible to get myself in the best shape ever. I am treating this (the National Open) as an Olympic contest
The Guyana Amateur Boxing Association has scheduled its National Open for October 24, 25 and 26. The National Open is the penultimate of the association’s statutory elite competitions for the year and Small is a part of a number of USA-based amateur fighters who have signalled their intention to participate.
“We plan stepping it up a bit very soon. I am working really hard.” Small was loud in praise of fellow USA-based Guyanese Seon Bristol who he reported had been a tower of support. I cannot say how much appreciative I am of the support given by Mr. Seon Bristol and I want to publicly thank him.”
Meanwhile, GABA president Steve Ninvalle reported that most of Guyana’s senior fighters are not in intense training for the National Open which should be one with a difference.
“Following on the heels of the slug fest at the National Intermediate I think all fighters are aware that they will have to bring their best game to the National Open. There are no ifs or buts about that. We expect the highest form of competition come October month end,” the GABA boss said.
The eagerly-awaited National Open would be followed by the Champion of Champions in early December.
