At Unite for Haiti Concert…

National Relief Committee thanks performers, supporters
THE NATIONAL Committee for Haiti Relief in collaboration with Hits and Jams Promotions and Vision Sounds held a ‘Unite For Haiti Peace Concert’ on Friday evening, at the National Park which attracted hundreds of Guyanese from all walks of life.

The proceeds of the concert will go towards the relief effort for Haiti, whose capital, Port-au-Prince was devastated by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake on January 12, leaving in its wake tens of thousands dead and many homeless.

Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Ms Priya Manickchand, who is also Chairperson of the National Committee for Haiti Relief, in a brief presentation during the course of the event, thanked the supporters for their generosity in helping make the initiative a success.

“We are very happy at the committee level with the response of Guyanese thus far. This has shown the generosity of our people, and I can assure you that all the monies made from this concert are going to go towards the people of Haiti,” Minister Manickchand said.

She also expressed the Committee’s gratitude to the artistes for their performances, and assured them that the proceeds from the concert will go a long way in assisting Haitians.

“Your support is very vital and significant in the fact that you provided your service free for the cause of humanity and I thank you on behalf of the committee and I know the people of Haiti thank you also,” she said.

The event featured live performances in music, dance and drama from all sections of the entertainment industry. Among those performing were Shawn English, Celeste David, Jumo, Timeka Marshall, who reportedly came in from Jamaica especially for the event, and Big Red.
