Wife abuser remanded

WAYNE Williams, 36, of Lot 56 East Ville Annandale, East Coast Demerara, was yesterday remanded to prison on charges of malicious damage to property and unlawfully wounding his wife.

He appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson and pleaded not guilty to the charges, which stated that on January 18, he maliciously damaged one car windscreen valued $15,000 property of Neil Haynes. And on the said date, he unlawfully wounded his wife Sharmain Williams.

The defendant told the court that he was waiting for his wife at her workplace and Haynes came and picked her up instead. He said all he wanted was for his wife to go home with him, but she refused and went with Haynes.

Williams claimed that Haynes first attacked him and when he was going to hit him back his wife received the hit.

However, Haynes who was present in court said his niece called him to pick her up and when he arrived, the defendant attacked him with an ice pick. He said only his shirt was torn, but the defendant then stabbed his niece two times on both of her breasts.

The woman said she called her uncle to pick her up because the defendant was under the influence of alcohol. She said whenever her husband is intoxicated he always abused her for no reason.

Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, objected to bail stating that the virtual complainant normally suffers countless abuse from the hands of her husband. He said the injuries the virtual complainant received clearly shows that the defendant intended to cause severe damage to his wife.
Williams was remanded to prison and will return to court on February 11.
