Man admits to stealing zinc sheets from Police compound at Eve Leary

NAVIN Jameer, 30, (no address given) yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson to answer a simple larceny charge.

He pleaded guilty to the charge, which stated that on January 22, he stole four zinc sheets valued $8,000 property of Andre Braithwaite.

Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, stated that the defendant stole the zinc sheets from compound of the Police Officers’ Mess at Eve Leary where a police conference centre is being constructed. He said the defendant was caught by a security guard with the zinc sheets.

The defendant admitted that he leaned over the fence and took the four zinc sheets and that the security guard saw him and begged him for two of the zinc sheets. He claimed that because he did not give the security guard the zinc sheets and he was taken to the police station.

“Me nah know why he beg me fuh me zinc sheet that me thief. He could tek how much he want just how me tek dem and me nah frighten fuh talk cause dem policeman does tek de zinc sheets too” the defendant told the court.
Jameer was fined $30,000 with the alternative of twelve months imprisonment.
