GEORGE Hamilton, 44, of Lot 151 Middle Road, La Penitence, was put on a bond, to keep the peace for one year, after being convicted of larceny yesterday.
But Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, before whom he pleaded guilty to both charges, also sentenced him to one year imprisonment for escaping from lawful custody.
The prisoner admitted that, on January 14, he stole a $350 pack of sausages from DSL Supermarket and escaped from Kitty Police Station, also in Georgetown, while in custody there on a summary charge.
Hamilton said he had gone into the shop to make some purchases and had bought bread and one tin of sausages before stealing the packet and hiding it in his pants.
He acknowledged the wrongdoing and begged for leniency but an employee of the business place told the Court Hamilton goes there regularly and was suspected of shoplifting.
Consequently, a security guard was detailed to watch him and he was arrested after passing the cashier.
About the escaping, Hamilton said he had asked a policeman for five minutes to visit his boss and after the officer paid no attention to him, he ran out of the station but was arrested, again, on his way back.
