Police question suspects in murder/robbery at Safraz’s Sports Bar

B’ Division Commander, George Vyphuis has confirmed that several persons were arrested over the weekend and are being held for questioning for the robbery/murder at Safraz’s Sports Bar and Restaurant.

He said that the images which were taken from the camera in the bar are being used to identify the suspects and the detectives are following several leads.

ghtspot located at David and Lamaha Streets, Georgetown, waitress Khulmattie Singh, called ‘Kathy’ was shot and killed and two patrons including, an Australian national were shot and injured.

Police reported that at about 21:10 hours on Friday, three men, two of whom were armed with handguns, attacked and robbed patrons and staff of Safraz’s Sports Bar and Restaurant.

Police reported that three men entered the night spot and held up the patrons and staff. They then proceeded to rob several persons of their jewellery, cash and cell phones, in addition to the proceeds of the day’s sales from the bartender.

During the robbery, waitress Khulmattie Singh, called ‘Kathy’, of 224 Second Street, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, was shot and killed, while patrons Jason Montgomery, 38, an Australian National and of Subryanville, and Ronald Dhanraj, 39, of Ogle, East Coast Demerara, were shot and injured, Police said.

Montgomery was shot in his abdomen and is a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he underwent a surgical operation Saturday morning.

According to Montgomery’s business partner, Mark Xavier, his friend is recuperating rapidly and his condition has improved.

He is in Guyana for a month to market his product “Citrus Clean”, a cleaning agent which is bio-degradable.

Dhanraj was shot under his left arm and is a patient at a private hospital.The three assailants escaped in a waiting Toyota Carina AT 192 motor car.
