GLDA confirms readiness for the Second Annual Ruminant Expo

-slated for Sunday October 25, 2026

THE Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) confirms that preparations are complete for the Second Annual Ruminant Expo, scheduled for October 25, 2026, at the Rising Sun Turf Club, Weldaad, West Coast Berbice. Gates will open at 11:00 a.m.
Under the theme “Advancing the Ruminant Revolution: Building a Sustainable Value Chain,” the Expo will bring together breeders, producers, entrepreneurs, prospective investors, and members of the public. The event will showcase advancements in the ruminant industry while promoting knowledge exchange, sustainable production, investment, and enterprise development.
This year’s exhibition will feature more than 100 animals from regions 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10, reflecting increased participation by local breeders. Exhibitors will have opportunities to share practical experience, establish business connections, and engage with prospective buyers. Live animals will also be available for purchase, offering breeders and producers direct commercial opportunities.
Nelore will be among the cattle breeds on display. Most featured breeds have climate-resilient traits and have benefitted from breeding improvements aimed at meeting market demands. Their inclusion will show how improved genetics boost productivity, adaptability, and the long-term sustainability of the ruminant industry.
Complementing the livestock exhibition, GLDA will showcase its services in genetics, animal production, and pasture development, along with those offered by the Animal Nutrition Laboratory. Technical teams will provide guidance on livestock production and sector opportunities. These engagements will give established producers, prospective farmers, and entrepreneurs access to technical expertise, experienced breeders, and potential business partners.
The livestock competition has attracted increased participation from Regions 4 and 5, while Region 3 leads participation in the ovine and caprine categories. A total of 21 prizes are up for grabs by breeders across the competition categories. Region 4 will seek to retain its cattle Grand Champion title.
The programme will also feature cheese production and other value-added products, highlighting opportunities to diversify farm income, expand local processing, and strengthen the ruminant value chain. These activities are intended to encourage farmers to support enterprise development beyond selling live animals.
Further showcasing the culinary potential of the sector, the programme will include the anticipated ‘Mutton Curry Competition’. Defending champion Team GSA, representing the Guyana School of Agriculture, plans to introduce a more creative entry with bolder spices in its bid to retain the title.
The event will offer entertainment for all ages, along with free, secure parking. The West Berbice Sheep and Goat Association, Guyana’s largest association of its kind, will provide food and refreshments at affordable prices. All are invited to attend.
