GTTA welcomes government’s announced restrictions on vaping products

THE Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) welcomes and commends the Government of Guyana’s announcement of restrictions on the importation and sale of vaping devices and products, under the leadership of His Excellency Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali.

In a press release, the association emphasised that protecting our children and young people, particularly at an age where they are exploratory and when curiosity and peer influence can leave them vulnerable to harmful products, must remain a national priority.

“The GTTA applauds the President’s leadership in taking action to safeguard their health and future.

“Health evidence highlights the risks associated with vaping, including nicotine addiction and exposure to harmful chemicals. Nicotine and the chemicals contained in vaping devices can also adversely affect brain development in children and adolescents. These concerns reinforce the need for prevention, education, and effective oversight.

“As a sporting organisation, the GTTA believes that encouraging healthy lifestyles goes hand in hand with developing sporting talent. Table tennis and other sports provide positive avenues for young people to build confidence, discipline, friendships, and lifelong healthy habits,” the release said.

It added that the association calls on parents, teachers, coaches, businesses, and all citizens to give this initiative their fullest support.

“We urge compliance with the restrictions as they take effect and encourage citizens to report suspected unlawful importation or sale through the appropriate authorities.

“Protecting our young people is a shared responsibility. The GTTA joins President Ali and his government in his effort to promote the protection and well-being of our citizens,” it added.
