GUYANA have opened their medal account at the South American U23 Games in Santa Fe, Argentina, with an impressive quarter-mile run by Tishawn Easton in the men’s 400m final.
Easton delivered a resolute performance to claim silver in 46.85 seconds, capping a strong campaign after laying down a marker in the semi-finals, where he qualified second with 46.75 seconds.
Brazil’s Vinicius Moura Galeno proved too strong in the final, surging ahead to secure gold in 46.32 seconds, while his compatriot Emerson Vieira Do Nascimento completed the podium line-up by taking bronze in 47.03 seconds.
Agony followed elsewhere on the track and field programme for the Guyanese contingent as Rodel Greene narrowly missed a podium spot in the men’s triple jump.
Greene recorded a best effort of 15.45 metres to finish fourth overall, cruelly denied a bronze medal on a tie-break countback based on second-best attempts after finishing level with his third-placed rival.
It proved a challenging outing in the men’s 100m, as Guyana’s sprinters couldn’t progress beyond the semi-final stage. Robert Marcus ran 10.96 seconds in the opening heat, while Jeremiah George ran 11.15 seconds in the second heat, so both missed out on a place in the final
