Floodwaters recede in Charity as drainage efforts intensify

FLOODWATERS in Charity, Essequibo Coast, Region Two, have begun to recede following intensified drainage efforts involving the activation of pumps, the use of excavators, improved koker drainage, and the removal of excessive weeds obstructing waterways. The efforts were a collaborative one among the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), NDIA and the Ministry of Agriculture.
Regional Chairman Devin Mohan, Regional Vice Chairman Humace Oodit, and regional engineers have been on the ground monitoring the situation and coordinating interventions to reduce the floodwaters affecting residents.
Excavators are being utilised to assist with drainage works, while pumps have been activated to remove accumulated water from affected areas. The clearing of excessive weeds from drainage channels is also helping to improve the flow of water, allowing it to drain more efficiently through the system.
Koker drainage is being facilitated as part of the ongoing response, while Enhancement workers are assisting with the cleaning of drains and other related activities to support the drainage operations.
The combined efforts are aimed at lowering water levels as quickly as possible and bringing relief to households that awoke to floodwaters inside their homes.
Additional pumps are also being mobilised as the technical team continues to monitor conditions and coordinate the response.
Meanwhile, residents are assessing the damage caused by the flooding, which affected household appliances, poultry pens, and home gardens.
One resident, Diana Williams from Amazon Scheme, said that she woke up around 4:00 am and her kitchen was flooded. She said she immediately woke up her children who assisted her to move the household items.
“The water was very high in the kitchen I couldn’t imagine, we had to put sand bags” Williams said.
Drainage operations are continuing as efforts remain focused on removing the accumulated water and reducing the risk of further flooding in the community.
