THE 24-acre truck parking facility being developed at Hermitage, Wales, West Bank Demerara, is approximately 75 per cent complete and is expected to become operational before the end of 2026, Minister of Housing, Collin Croal, has announced.
The minister provided the update during recent a visit to the construction site, where he inspected ongoing works and engaged contractors on the project’s progress.
According to information released by the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), six contractors are currently executing works across six lots, with four expected to be completed within the next month. The remaining two lots are scheduled for completion before the end of the year.

Works have advanced to the placement of crusher run, while lighting installations are also planned to accommodate operations beyond regular working hours.
Minister Croal also announced that a management committee will be established to oversee the operations of designated truck parking facilities, with details of the proposed fee structure and operational arrangements expected to be made public in the coming days.
He explained that the committee will be responsible for ensuring the facilities are properly maintained, secured and efficiently operated.
The operational framework will include security arrangements, maintenance provisions and a fee structure designed to support the long-term sustainability of the facilities.
The initiative is also expected to generate employment opportunities for persons involved in the daily management, security and upkeep of the facilities.
Once operational, the Hermitage facility will provide a designated space for truck operators and other commercial vehicle owners to park, service and undertake routine maintenance of their vehicles.

Minister Croal explained that the development forms part of the government’s wider initiative to establish designated truck parking and automotive service areas across the country.
The initiative is intended to address longstanding concerns surrounding the parking and servicing of heavy-duty vehicles in residential communities, while creating more organised spaces for commercial transport operations.
He pointed to the truck parking facility at Grove, East Bank Demerara, which is expected to become the first such facility to commence operations, noting that similar management arrangements will be implemented at Hermitage.
The minister expressed confidence that the Hermitage facility would be operational before year end, providing much-needed accommodation for commercial vehicle operators in Region Three.
The Hermitage development is one of two designated truck parking facilities being pursued in Region Three as the government continues to expand the initiative nationwide.
Minister Croal reiterated that the investments are aimed at improving road safety, reducing congestion and supporting the continued expansion of Guyana’s transportation and logistics sectors.
