-GPHC Oncology Department says
THE Oncology Department at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) provides compassionate, high-quality care and hope to persons from across Guyana who have been diagnosed with cancer.
From early diagnosis and personalised treatment plans to palliative care and emotional support, the Oncology Department’s multidisciplinary team stands strong besides patients through each step of their journey with cancer.
Identified as a treatment centre for cancer patients, the Oncology department sees around 20 or 25 patients in the Chemotherapy Room, and at least 15 new patients every week.
To join, a person must have a confirmed diagnosis of cancer. This is done through a biopsy. Patients are typically referred to the GPHC from either the Outpatient Department or from another hospital, after which they are given an appointment.
The doctor then decides what treatment a patient should be given, whether it be radiotherapy or immunotherapy, and patients are monitored until they are completely healed.
In addition to treatment, the department offers medical imaging, pathology, new case consultations, follow-up consultations, nutrition advice, a pharmacy for medication, and oncology lab services.
The department marked Breast Cancer Awareness Month earlier in October with a Pinning Ceremony, which brought together patients, cancer survivors, healthcare workers, and supporters to recognise the importance of early detection, treatment, support, and hope.
The GPHC, as the national referral hospital, plays an integral role in Guyana’s cancer response through the oncology clinic. Along with Guyanese the clinic serves persons from across the Caribbean who come to Guyana seeking treatment.
