A WOMAN was arrested on Wednesday after prison authorities allegedly found a quantity of suspected cannabis concealed in a box she was attempting to deliver to an inmate at the Mazaruni Prison.
The suspect, identified as Tachanna Henry, a resident of ‘C’ Field, Sophia, Georgetown, was intercepted at approximately 10:15 hours on October 7 during a visit to the Georgetown Prison.
According to authorities, Henry was subjected to a search upon arrival at the correctional facility, during which officers discovered several plastic bags containing leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis.
The woman was informed of the discovery and subsequently arrested. She was taken to the Alberttown Police Station along with the suspected narcotics, where investigations are continuing.
The package was reportedly intended for prisoner Kevon Alfred, who is currently housed at the Mazaruni location.
Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot warned members of the public against attempting to introduce prohibited items into correctional facilities, stressing that the smuggling of contraband into prisons constitutes a felony and carries serious consequences.
Elliot urged civilians to consider the potential risks to themselves, inmates, prison officers and wider society when engaging in the illicit trade of contraband within correctional facilities.
He also commended the prison officers involved for their vigilance and prompt action, which resulted in the suspected contraband being intercepted before it entered the facility.
