GUYANA Football Federation president Wayne Forde has hailed the Golden Jaguars’ perfect start to their Concacaf Nations League campaign, saying head coach Marco Bonofiglio and his side “have made believers of us all” as they push for Gold Cup qualification.
Guyana completed a flawless opening window with four victories from four matches in League B, Group A, sweeping past Puerto Rico, the Cayman Islands, and Dominica twice to top the group with 12 points and a +14-goal difference.
The dominant run has extended Guyana’s international winning streak to nine consecutive matches.
Forde singled out Bonofiglio for transforming the national setup’s culture since taking charge of the senior men’s programme.
“What we are seeing is not only reflected in the results on the pitch, but in the chemistry, discipline, confidence and body language of our players and staff,” Forde said.
“When I tasked Coach Marco with leading the professionalisation of our programme, I made it clear that the objective was not simply to participate, but to deliver results for the nation while building a programme capable of sustaining success.”
The primary target remains securing Guyana’s second-ever appearance at the Concacaf Gold Cup, following their debut appearance in 2019.
“Our historic qualification for the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup remains one of the proudest moments of my presidency, our football community and our nation,” Forde added. “We are determined to give our Golden Jaguars every possible opportunity to experience that feeling again.”
Backing that ambition has required substantial backing, with the GFF committing over GYD 70 million towards preparation and logistics across the opening four fixtures, alongside a further GYD 35 million projected for the concluding international window in November.
With matches against Puerto Rico and the Cayman Islands coming up, Forde urged both players and supporters to keep their eyes on the ultimate prize.
“We have come this far together, but the job is not yet done,” Forde said. “Go home, rest, regroup and refocus. Then we come back in November ready to take it all the way. The dream is alive.”
