THREE miners, including two non-nationals, have been detained following the discovery of an alleged illegal mining operation along the Siparuni River, where machinery was reportedly used to extract minerals from the riverbank.
The Ministry of Natural Resources said the operation was uncovered by an enforcement team from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), which found mining machinery positioned on the riverbank and a river dredge directed into the bank.
According to the ministry, the activity caused damage to the riverbank, with the GGMC now assessing the extent of the environmental impact.
The enforcement team seized the river dredge and other equipment allegedly associated with the operation, including a motor vehicle. The matter has since been handed over to the Guyana Police Force for further investigation.
The miner identified as being responsible for the operation will also be required to account for the gold extracted from the area and meet the costs associated with reclaiming the damaged site, the ministry said.
The Ministry of Natural Resources reiterated that mining operations must be conducted in accordance with the requisite approvals and environmental safeguards.
It said operators found engaging in illegal mining would be held accountable for their activities, including the rehabilitation of areas damaged as a result of unauthorised operations.
