SECTIONS of the vandalised water distribution network at Stewartville and Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, are to be repaired after damage to pipelines resulted in significant water wastage, low water pressure, and, in some cases, left residents without water.
The intervention follows a visit by Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar to Stewartville East and West, and Meten-Meer-Zorg Phase Two, where concerns surrounding the water supply were examined.
Following the visit, contractors from the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) mobilised to the affected communities in preparation for repair works.
The damaged sections of the distribution network have been identified as contributing to water wastage and reduced pressure experienced by residents.
Repair works are expected to commence shortly to rectify the damaged network, and improve water pressure across the affected areas.
Beyond the immediate intervention, plans are also moving ahead to strengthen the communities’ water supply through the drilling of two new wells.
Tenders are currently out for the drilling of one well at Stewartville and another at Meten-Meer-Zorg. The tender period is scheduled to close on October 6, 2026.
The new wells are expected to provide additional water-production capacity and form part of efforts to improve the reliability of water supply to residents along the West Coast Demerara.
