IN 2010, Trevor Benn was selected to represent Guyana in the Regional four-day tournament, but as fate would have it, the gifted all-rounder wasn’t given a chance to show off his wares since he “sat on the bench’ throughout the competition.
Benn pointed out that he claimed the most wickets in the trials leading up to the tournament but unfortunately failed to make the playing X1 during the tournament.
Fast forward to 2026, some 16 years later, the Guyana Police Force officer is set to represent the West Indies Masters Over-40 side at the upcoming International Masters Cricket (IMC) Over-40 World Cup to be staged in Guyana, starting on October 17.
Undaunted by not getting the opportunity to represent his country, Benn continued playing club cricket in Georgetown, East Bank and Essequibo where for the most part he performed creditably.
Benn joined the Guyana Police Force in 2008 and during that period, apart from representing the force, he also played for Essequibo at the Inter-County level.
Prior to that, Benn, who is excited to be part of the WI Masters squad, also played club cricket in South Essequibo for Concrete Warriors and Rising Stars.
Born at Bartica, Region Seven, Benn grew up in a little village named Makouria, approximately seven miles from Bartica. He later went to the Essequibo Coast at a tender age where he attended Suddie Primary School and later, Abrams Zuil Secondary School where he starred mainly in athletics before transitioning to cricket.
Benn, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, is currently representing the GPF Officers in the annual Commander-in-Chief T20 Cup 2026 tournament, His brilliant all-round performance led the Officers to a commanding 35-run victory over the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) in the opening game, played at the Police Sports Club ground last Tuesday.
Winning the toss and electing to take first strike, GPF Officers reached a competitive 182 for five from their allotted 20 overs with Benn leading the charge with an impressive 61 from just 30 deliveries, spanking two fours and four sixes in the process as his team reached 182 for five in their allotted 20 overs.
Benn then crowned a fine all-round performance, grabbing three for 15 from his four overs as GPS reached 147 for nine when their overs expired.
In reply, GPS made 147 for nine when their 20 overs expired.
