NEARLY 11 years after Nephi Noel Luther was shot dead in Georgetown, Kanand Ojha has been charged with murder in connection with the 2015 killing.
Ojha appeared on Monday, September 21, 2026, before Chief Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where the murder charge was read to him.
He was arrested on Friday, September 18, by ranks of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters after being returned to Guyana from the United States.

The development brings renewed attention to a case that had remained unresolved in relation to one of the two men originally wanted by Guyanese authorities in connection with Luther’s death.
Luther, 20, was shot at about 02:35 hours on July 22, 2015, at the corner of Carmichael and Quamina Streets, Georgetown. He was subsequently taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he was pronounced dead. Contemporary reports stated that he had suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Police had initially issued wanted bulletins for Ojha and Ron “Andel” Forde following the killing. Forde was subsequently arrested, charged and eventually sentenced to 20 years in prison in June 2017 after pleading guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter.
Ojha remained outside the jurisdiction for years. The Guyana Police Force issued a wanted bulletin for him in July 2019.
According to reports, Ojha was arrested in Queens, New York, on September 8, 2025, during a coordinated operation involving US law-enforcement agencies and Guyanese authorities.
His subsequent removal from the United States led to his return to Guyana on Friday, September 18, when he was handed over to local law-enforcement authorities and taken to CID Headquarters.
The case has involved co-operation between Guyanese and US law-enforcement authorities, including under the Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters framework.
