U.S. company, Strategic Bauxite Inc., is preparing to expand its refractory-grade bauxite operations in Guyana following its acquisition of Guyana-based First Bauxite LLC in July.
The company’s expansion plans were discussed during a recent meeting between U.S. Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot and leaders of Strategic Bauxite, with the proposed investment expected to support mining and processing capacity in Guyana.
The expansion is being supported by an US$85.5 million equity investment from the U.S. Government through its Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment (IBAS) programme, alongside US$64.5 million in private-sector co-investment.
According to the U.S. Embassy, the combined funding will support expansion of the bauxite mine and the construction of new calcination facilities in Guyana. A subsequent brown-fused alumina facility is also planned in the United States.
The development is expected to strengthen the supply chain for refractory-grade bauxite, a specialised mineral used in high-temperature industrial applications.
Following the meeting, Ambassador Theriot said it was encouraging to hear more about Strategic Bauxite’s plans and the opportunities the investment could create in Guyana.
The company’s leadership also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high standards in occupational safety, environmental performance and regulatory compliance, while engaging with communities affected by its operations.
The investment forms part of broader U.S.-Guyana economic co-operation, particularly in areas linked to critical mineral supply chains and industrial development.
The United States has said it welcomes partnerships that strengthen critical supply chains while promoting responsible investment and sustainable economic opportunities in Guyana.
