EDUCATION Minister, Sonia Parag, on Tuesday, led a multi-agency assessment of the University of Guyana’s Turkeyen Campus as Government moves to identify and address infrastructural needs and improve the learning environment for students and staff.
The inspection covered classrooms, lecture theatres, washrooms, the library and other key facilities across the campus, with technical officers assessing areas requiring repairs, upgrades and other improvements.
The exercise follows an initiative by President Irfaan Ali to strengthen the physical infrastructure at the University of Guyana and ensure that its facilities can effectively support face-to-face teaching and learning.
The assessment is intended to identify priority works needed to ensure that the campus is safe, functional and conducive to teaching and learning.
Minister Parag was accompanied by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Shannielle Hoosein-Outar; Chief Education Officer, Saddam Hussain and Adviser on Tertiary Education Reform, Dr Kofi Dalrymple, who is also Dean of the University of Guyana’s Faculty of Engineering and Technology.
Permanent secretaries and technical officers from several other ministries and government agencies also participated in the inspection.
The team examined the condition of key facilities and considered areas where intervention may be required to improve the campus environment and support the University’s academic operations.
The assessment forms part of wider efforts to address infrastructural requirements at the country’s premier tertiary institution and ensure that students and staff have access to facilities capable of supporting effective face-to-face education.
The University of Guyana’s Turkeyen Campus is the institution’s main campus and accommodates a wide range of academic programmes and services.
