DEFENDING Elite League champions Slingerz and the Guyana Defence Force Football Clubs are tied for the lead at the top of the standings after the first rounds of matches in the Guyana Football Federation Elite League Season 8.
GDF and Slingerz have two wins apiece after their opening games, with both teams boasting six points.
GDF have a one-goal advantage in goal difference over Slingerz.
In the last set of matches over the weekend Slingerz gave debutants Campton FC a stern test at the GFF National Training Center.
Curtez Kellman scored for Slingerz in the 38th minute for the lone goal of the first half as Camptown showed fight, but errors from the champions saw them not building on the advantage in the first half.
The second half saw a more determined Slingerz effort; they stepped up their attack and found success.
Yusifu Kargbo gave them their second goal in the 72nd minute, followed shortly afterwards by a brace from Bryan Wharton, extending their lead in the 83rd and 86th minutes.
Meanwhile, a Colin Nelson goal broke the deadlock between the Guyana Defence Force FC and Western Tigers FC as they walked away with a needle victory.
On Saturday Police FC came from behind to outmaneuver Fruta Conquerors 2-1 in their encounter.
Monedderlust also defeated Den Amstel 2-1 after goals from Rayon Rose and Delwin Fraser.
The action resumes this coming weekend with double headers on Saturday and Sunday.
