RESIDENTS of Bumbury Village in Region One are benefiting from new investments to strengthen livelihoods, expand skills development and improve household welfare, with a sewing centre and craft shop among the latest initiatives undertaken in the community.
Speaking with the Department of Information (DPI) on Tuesday, Toshao John Hernandez said the sewing centre, valued at approximately $5 million, was established for residents, particularly young people, to develop practical skills and pursue income-generating activities.
The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs (MOAA) also provided an additional $2 million in assistance to furnish the facility.
The community has also invested in a craft shop, creating another avenue for residents to develop and market locally produced items.
It will also preserve indigenous culture and traditions.
Toshao Hernandez said these initiatives form part of a broader development agenda being advanced in Bumbury, with support from government programmes and community-based investments.
He said, “We don’t want our ancestors’ culture to die away.”
He explained that cultural preservation remains a priority, noting that young girls in the community are currently being taught Amerindian dances as part of preparations for heritage activities.
Alongside these economic and cultural developments, the community has also seen improvements in basic infrastructure.
Toshao Hernandez said 20 streetlights were installed using funding from the Presidential Grant, enhancing safety and visibility for residents.
The village has also benefited from a housing initiative financed through the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS), with approximately $12 million invested to renovate 56 houses, directly benefiting 56 families.
For the current year, Bumbury received approximately $7.5 million in LCDS funding, which the toshao said is being expended to advance projects that respond to residents’ needs.
The village leader said the community’s development has been particularly significant since he assumed the post of toshao in 2020, pointing to the range of initiatives undertaken during his tenure.
Bumbury, which has approximately 300 residents, continues to benefit from government interventions, including support for community facilities and initiatives designed to improve livelihoods and access to opportunities.
The community chief said the community’s selection to host this year’s Village Day, on the 12th of September 2026, is also a source of pride for residents and provides an opportunity to showcase Bumbury’s culture, achievements and ongoing development. (DPI)
