THE Director of the Custom Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) Guyana, James Singh, has issued a stark public safety warning following reports of illicit drugs, excessive alcohol use, and possible drink-spiking at social events, declaring that “social events should create memories, not victims.”
Singh, in a post on CANU’s official Facebook page, described the recent incidents as deeply concerning, emphasising that even a single pill, drink, or careless decision can have life-altering consequences and that drugs are “not harmless entertainment” but can be concealed in everyday items such as drinks, pills, powders, vapes, and candy.
He warned that these substances can lead to overdose, unconsciousness, permanent injury, sexual vulnerability, violence, and possible death, adding that no party, trend, or peer pressure is worth risking a life.
To partygoers, Singh offered clear, practical guidance: do not accept drinks, pills, vapes, or any substances from strangers; never leave your drink unattended; trust your instincts; and seek help immediately if something feels wrong, while also looking out for friends who may appear unusually impaired.
Addressing event promoters and organisers directly, he stated that safety is a duty rather than an afterthought and outlined expectations for responsible event management, including creating an environment where drug activity is not tolerated, addressing suspicious behaviour promptly, ensuring a visible and trained security presence, preparing staff to recognise and respond to incidents, making medical support accessible on-site, and encouraging safe transport options for attendees leaving the venue.
“A successful event is measured not only by the crowd or the music but also by whether everyone gets home safely,” Singh said.
The statement closes with a direct appeal to the public to be alert and responsible, reiterating that drugs do not belong at any party and that one decision can change a life, urging everyone to make the right choice.
