WHERE many may opt to work within an office setting, there are those who prefer to work with their hands. This is where the Ministry of Labour and Manpower Planning steps in, working towards ensuring Guyanese are skilled, empowered and employed across various fields.
Recently, the ministry highlighted two individuals who are pursuing the Electrical Installation training through the Board of Industrial Training (BIT), which comes under the labour ministry. These persons are McGiver Miller and Orella Trotman.
The ministry said that for McGiver, pursuing that training programme is an opportunity to strengthen the skills he uses as an electrician, and he would be able to gain certification to support his growth professionally.
McGiver said the training has already helped him tremendously to move forward in his profession and learn new things.
He remarked that he is thankful for a free programme such as this, because “if I was to pay for such education, it would cost a lot of money. So, I’m glad that the government provide it free for us to go and empower ourselves, make a better future for us and our children,” he said.
For Ms. Trotman, the skills she is currently gaining through the training can provide an additional source of income, and the independence to handle electrical tasks within her home.
“I started this course because I am a very curious person. When a Technical Officer had reached out to me and told me all these courses were being offered, I said, “you know what, electrical sounds like a good option. So, I decided to come and so far, it has been a wonderful experience,” Trotman expressed.
She noted that in addition to being curious, the reason she has continued with the course is because it would be a “very good additional source of income for me and also in my personal life,” she said.
In July, BIT’s CEO, Richard Maughn, announced that there is a plan to train an additional 2,000 individuals by the end of this year, following a commitment made during the 2026 National Budget.
Maughn had said that this continued investment demonstrates the government’s commitment to ensuring Guyanese are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to meaningfully contribute to Guyana’s development.
This expansion of BIT’s programmes forms part of a broader national effort to strengthen human capital development and ensure that young people are prepared to participate in Guyana’s everchanging economic landscape.
